Winter is probably my least favorite season. I. HATE. BEING. COLD! Give me too hot vs. too cold any day. I’m a natural homebody, so once January rolls around, I’m in full-on hibernation mode. For me (and I think it’s safe to say for many others as well), hygge (pronounced “hoogah”) is the perfect remedy for beating the winter blues, and can actually make frigid winters more enjoyable.
When I first heard about the Danish culture of hygge a couple years ago, I became an immediate fan girl. While hard to fully define, it’s been described as everything from the “art of coziness,” “the coziness of the soul” and even “cocoa by candlelight.” Basically it’s about creating the ultimate homey atmosphere so that you can embrace being fully in the moment. Hygge can be shared with loved ones over a candle lit dinner at home, or can be created by snuggling on the couch with warm blankets, a good book, and a hot cup of tea. Below you’ll find my personal hygge kit list. Let’s get cozy! 😉
CANDLES & MOOD LIGHTING – Basically, the more candles the better. Soft, dim lighting is essential to creating a hygge- like atmosphere. This candle from the Hearth & Hand collection from Target smells so dreamy! I’ve also been a big fan of fairy lights lately – they give off the prettiest glow.
SWEET TREATS & HOT DRINKS – Whatever confection your heart desires, have at it! The key is to not feel guilty about it 😉 Everything in moderation, right? Enjoy it with a hot cup of coffee, tea, or even mulled wine. Make sure to savor every bite and sip!
COMFY KNITS, SOCKS & SLIPPERS – First, don your comfiest oversized sweater, sweats, and socks. Then, snuggle up on the couch with a blanket and a good read or even good company (heaven!) I also just got these Minnetonka slippers for Christmas and they are like pillows for your feet – definite hygge material.
SOOTHING TUNES – Nothing like a good record to set the mood. I’m into jazz music lately, and my favorites have been Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, Billie Holiday’s Greatest Hits, and Ella Fitzgerald’s Hello Dolly.
CAMERA – While hygge can be a magical experience on your own, it’s also amazing when shared with family & friends. Throw a hygge party by inviting company over for a pot-luck dinner (tell them to rock their PJs! 😉 ) If you’re like me and love to snap photos, use a Fujifilm Instax mini to capture little moments of the evening. The pics could be a fun memento for guests to take home, or even just a fun way to revisit those special moments of hygge.
